GOG.com alive and well!

Posted on September 22, 2010 by Matt

I’m happy to report that GOG’s earlier website shutdown was a “stunt”, admittedly poor, and the truth is they’re relaunching after completing their beta phase. Congrats to GOG, here’s to many, many more amazing titles.

Best Quote Ever About DNA

Posted on September 20, 2010 by Matt

One of my passions is biblical creation. Lately, I’ve been in a bedtime reading pattern of Creation Magazine, and then surfing Creation.com for random reading material to grow my grey matter, so to speak. I came across this quote tonight in a discussion thread about applying DNA’s compression techniques to our own computer compression algorithms…

Beware insane customs brokerage fees for shipments entering Canada

Posted on September 19, 2010July 19, 2014 by Matt

I ordered an item online, from a shop in California, with a value of approx. $250. Shipping was something like $20 via FedEx. Okay, I ordered it. I got the item, was very satisfied. A few weeks later I get a customs charge of $90, 35% of the item price!

Acer Liquid E Review

Posted on September 14, 2010September 12, 2010 by Matt

For about 5 years now I’ve been using an old school Motorola V551 flip-phone. It worked as a phone, took a surprising amount of abuse, and didn’t do much else and didn’t do anything with any kind of style. So, I upgraded to the Acer Liquid E and I’ve been playing around with it for about a week now.

Fixing your car key fobs with a knife, scissors, elastic, paper and super glue!

Posted on September 12, 2010December 26, 2015 by Matt

Update 2014-12-03: I have a new, better, simpler fix for this. Earlier this year the original solution I had stopped working. The problem is the electrical contacts (little circular pads for each button on the inside of the fob) were slowly disintegrating. You can tell because the black part is starting to wear through. While…

Super Glue

Posted on September 12, 2010September 12, 2010 by Matt

I often find myself using super glues to fix delicate things. I often think I can fix a circuit board, like say my car key fob, by faking soldering by using super glue to hold the metal contacts together. It’s not necessarily always successful. Everyone knows Krazy-brand glue and everyone also knows it’s pretty cheap stuff. It doesn’t really live up to its promises. So I googled around and I found some more options.

Fix for Firefox Freezing

Posted on September 11, 2010September 10, 2010 by Matt

Firefox has long had an issue with freezing/hitching. Here’s the fix: Go to about:config, search for browser.sessionstore.interval and set it higher than its default (10000). The units are milliseconds (divide by 1000 to get seconds). I prefer to set it to 60000 or greater.
