Middle-Earth Stories: Select Chapters for Short Stories

Posted on January 9, 2026 by Shovas

For some years now, I have often listened to the Rob Inglis audiobook narrations of the Lord of the Rings. Concerning Hobbits, and the entire prologue to the Lord of the Rings, makes for particularly excellent bedtime listening. Out of this habit came a wish for more Middle-Earth short stories and these are the compilations of chapters that best fit that purpose, that is, a half an hour to an hour of good, calming storytelling.

The Lord of the Rings

  • Concerning Hobbits (FOTR Prologue)
    • Concerning Hobbits
    • Concerning Pipe-weed
    • Of the Finding of the Ring
    • Note on the Shire Records
  • Hobbit Hike (FOTR Bk 1 Ch 3-5)
  • Old Forest (FOTR Bk 1 Ch 6-8)
  • The Council of Elrond (FOTR Bk 2 Ch 2)
  • Lothlórien (FOTR Bk 2 Ch 6-8)
  • Homeward (ROTK Bk 6 Ch 6-9)
  • Appendices (Return of the King)
    • Appendix A: Annals of the Kings and Rulers
      • The Númenórean Kings
      • The House of Eorl
      • Durin’s Folk
    • Appendix B: The Tale of Years (Chronology of the Westlands)
    • Appendix C: Family Trees (Hobbits)
    • Appendix D: Calendars
      • Shire Calendar for use in all years // (Unsure)
      • The Calendars // (Unsure)
    • Appendix F: Writing and Spelling
      • The Languages and Peoples of the Third Age // (Unsure)

The Hobbit

  • An Unexpected Party (Ch 1-2)
  • Queer Lodgings (Ch 7)
  • The Return Journey (The Hobbit Ch 18-19)

The Silmarillion

  • Ainulindalë: The Music of the Ainur (Part I)
  • Valaquenta: Account of the Valar and Maiar according to the lore of the Eldar (Part II)
  • Quenta Silmarillion: The History of the Silmarils (Part III)
    • Each chapter is worthy as a short story

How to Listen

  • You can find some or all of these selections by searching YouTube, Audible, Archive.org, or wherever else you purchase audiobooks.
    • The Rob Inglis recordings you can find on Archive.org are excellent, and easily downloadable, but may require some organization to identify the chapters.
    • Additional organization may be required to adequately massage them for adding to your phone via apps like iTunes, in order to get the chapter sorting working.
