US Military Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Posted on February 6, 2010 by Matt

In an amusing and ironic twist of best intentions, the US military, by extension of their funding of DARPA who funded early research that lead to the internet, has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Replying to a Sent folder email: Why don’t email clients ever get this right?

Posted on February 5, 2010 by Matt

When I send an email I’ll often remember I wanted to say something else so I go to my Sent folder, click the email and hit Reply All. It seems every email client has a different idea of what exactly Reply/Reply All on a Sent folder email means. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think this is a hard thing to get right.

Request for a Versioning File System on Linux

Posted on February 1, 2010January 29, 2010 by Matt

The people who make file systems are developers. As a developer myself the value of a versioning file system is so keenly clear I’m so surprised it’s not, at the very least, a standard option on every single file system ever created. So this is a request to all the file system developers out there: Please, what can we do to get a versioning file system?

Morning for Mom

Posted on January 31, 2010January 29, 2010 by Matt

It’s been a week since mom left us. In a blur of hurry we made arrangements for visitation, reception and funeral. Two visitations on Sunday went by quicker than I thought they would. Monday’s service took a long time to approach but the day passed on in a rush. It is now a few days after the funeral. I’ll be going back to work Monday. My brother and sister have begun heading back into their lives. Dad will begin the time when it feels like there should be someone standing beside you, but you reach out and there is only empty air. I miss you mom.

Early this morning I received a call from my dad telling me mom had passed away. My mom was an amazing person, an incredible Christian and an inspiration to so many people she touched over her lifetime.

Gobolinux – an intriquing contrarian take on entrenched unix-like ideas

Posted on January 15, 2010January 14, 2010 by Matt

Gobolinux is a linux distribution with a different goal than most distributions: Try things out that should be doable on unix-like operating systems but are often complicated by tradition, ritual or most likely laziness. Gobo isn’t going to be your desktop, unless you’re a masochist, but it is an interesting commentary on some valuable principles we started with which are losing traction.

An Observation on Justice in the Aftermath of Atrocities

Posted on January 14, 2010January 14, 2010 by Matt

When one really thinks about the things that ordinary, average citizens went along with during the Nazi period of Germany, we begin to realize that we are lucky that we were not German at that point in time. We know we would most likely have fared no more ethically than those accused and convicted. And, yet, even knowing our own guilt, avoided only chance, we understand we must forge ahead and and prosecute these people to the full extent of the law, even to death.

Auger vs Burrows (NHL vs you and me)

Posted on January 12, 2010December 24, 2010 by Matt

The hockey world is aflame with passionate discourse on the Burrows afair. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Burrows made allegations about NHL referee Auger after a game the night of Jan 11 10 between Vancouver and Nashville. Burrows claims the penalties Auger gave him that game were revenge for making Auger look bad in a previous game.
