Better Colour Schemes for PuTTY

Posted on June 8, 2011September 20, 2014 by Matt

Update 2014-09-20: Try the Consolas font instead of the default Courier New. It’s slightly smaller but still quite readable and permits a narrow 80×40 window which I can lay out side-by-side 3 times on my desktop (1920×1080) without overlapping. That’s something you can’t do with Courier New at 80×40. Give it a try under Putty…

How to buy music on iTunes or at your favourite shop

Posted on March 10, 2011April 24, 2011 by Matt

Update 2011-03-12: Added “Don’t buy samplers” rule. Update 2011-04-24: No longer against iTunes deluxe albums. A few of my rules for buying music. Some apply to iTunes, some to all music media. Buy full albums. Get to know your artists. Stop listening to what the Man tells you to listen to by only buying singles….

Tal & Acacia

Posted on January 4, 2011January 6, 2011 by Matt

Update 2011-01-06: I’ve surprised myself by putting this album on quite a bit recently. The simple, sincere lyrics mixed with a refreshing style really hit a certain sweet spot. Give this one a listen! Found this two-sister duo, Tal & Acacia, on iTunes recently and was pleasantly surprised to hear a unique mix of styles…

Christus Invictus: Behind the Verse

Posted on December 26, 2010April 26, 2017 by Matt

Update 2015-05-16: I just came across a well-written post–“Invictus” Redeemed–about the poem and Dorothy Day’s response to it from many years ago. Day’s poem is a good read but the author writes quite well on why it is the original poem isn’t all that inspiring or reasonable when you get into the details. Christus Invictus:…

Beware insane customs brokerage fees for shipments entering Canada

Posted on September 19, 2010July 19, 2014 by Matt

I ordered an item online, from a shop in California, with a value of approx. $250. Shipping was something like $20 via FedEx. Okay, I ordered it. I got the item, was very satisfied. A few weeks later I get a customs charge of $90, 35% of the item price!

Fixing your car key fobs with a knife, scissors, elastic, paper and super glue!

Posted on September 12, 2010December 26, 2015 by Matt

Update 2014-12-03: I have a new, better, simpler fix for this. Earlier this year the original solution I had stopped working. The problem is the electrical contacts (little circular pads for each button on the inside of the fob) were slowly disintegrating. You can tell because the black part is starting to wear through. While…

WordPress IP Blacklist not working? Remember .htaccess

Posted on June 6, 2010April 3, 2011 by Matt

Word to the wise: If you’re getting comment spam try Wordpress’ IP blacklist feature but, when that doesn’t work, try the guaranteed way: .htaccess.

Isaac Newton: Crazy man!

Posted on May 27, 2010May 20, 2012 by Matt

I’ve just finished reading Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time. It’s a great read and has really firmed up some ideas on physics I’ve had for a long time. But I thought I’d paste this exert here as it’s a really crazy summary of Isaac Newton’s life. It’s a short biography at the back of A Brief History of Time. I’m always surprised seeing people act so childishly. I hope Newton was happy acting like an idiot.
