The Hero Complex

Posted on December 5, 2010 by Matt

I always thought there must be something like a hero complex. Turns out there kind of is: “The person suffering from true Hero Complex will have hullicinations of saving the people they care about most…”

In this picture…

Posted on November 17, 2010February 14, 2013 by Matt

In this picture is a bale of hay. Another, smaller, lies to its right, some ways away. Dead grasses lie before it. The brown specks of Autumn lie behind. The waning sun shines upon it all and grants the place life and being…

A Religious Experience

Posted on November 15, 2010November 19, 2010 by Matt

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; \ Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: \ For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; \ His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, \ On earth is not his equal.

Posted on November 13, 2010November 13, 2010 by Matt

How to Round to Arbitrary Precision in any Programming Language

Posted on November 1, 2010November 19, 2010 by Matt

How to Round to Arbitrary Precision in any Programming Language: an AMultiply your rounding number by 10^y where y is the precision to round to. Call your language’s built-in round() method on this number. Divide the result by 10^y. Easy peasy. It also makes it easier to implement different rounding methods because you’re always dealing with the digit at the same location in the number.

An Easy to Remember, Professional Looking Letter Written in Notepad

Posted on October 31, 2010August 25, 2012 by Matt

Sometimes you need to write a letter, print it out and mail it. Not often, but sometimes you do. I was using Letterly.com but it stopped working for me and I needed to write a letter. So, I popped open Notepad and put the same components (to, from, opening, body, closing) vertically on the page. What results is a clear, concise, professional looking letter that can be written in Notepad, printed on whatever plain or letterhead paper you want, and looks as good as Word templates or other fancy online letter writers.

Defining Science

Posted on October 10, 2010 by Matt

When people talk about science, they infer and imply many things. They may be referring to scientists, the scientific method, the popularly accepted ideas of the day, or any number of perceptions about what constitutes “science” these days. Many times, I talk about science in the context of the act of scientific inquiry, that is, the act of applying our five natural senses, taste, touch, smell, sight and sound, or technological extensions of those senses, in order to inquire about world around us. These are the only tools acceptable to science and there are inherent limits in their application which prohibit them from tackling some very important questions.
