Gerber Down Syndrome ‘Spokesbaby of the Year’ May Help Start Changing Attitudes

Gerber’sspokesbaby of the year‘ is a child with Down Syndrome. Along with the exposure for a widespread public eye, as Gerber will be using the baby on social media and in advertising, it also puts under the spotlight parents who decided to keep their child rather than perform an abortion.

Anna Maria Tremonti, of CBC Radio’s The Current, recently aired a segment after the Gerber baby announcement concerning attitudes and abortion around babies with Down Syndrome. You can listen to the podcast and read the article over at The Current’s site..

We may still have a long way to go to encouraging mothers and parents that all lives are sacred and providing the support that all care-givers really need for their Down Syndrome babies, but this goes a long way in the public eye.

The Jian Ghomeshi Saga and Root Causes of Violence Against Women

The following is a letter I submitted to the CBC program The Current, hosted by talented radio personality Anna Maria Tremonti. In the letter, I have put to pen my increasing frustrations about the nature of the discussion surrounding violence against women and why it is that our public conversations never seem to get around to the root causes of the problem, and to exactly why we’re seeing the behaviour that we’re seeing. For the record…

The Jian Ghomeshi Saga and Root Causes of Violence Against Women

I’ve listened with great interest over the past few months to your podcasts and especially those about violence against women. From the #YesAllWomen campaign to the Jian Ghomeshi saga I’ve listened to a number of podcasts and even blogged and tweeted about some of the issues, myself.

After Atheism: New Perspectives on God and Religion

When I work from home I often listen to podcasts and I’ve been listening to CBC Radio Ideas’ After Atheism this week. This is what I’d call a post-post-modern look at religion and materialism over the past few thousand years. This is a compliment as they recognize things like the resurgence of spiritual interest, the myth of religious violence, the actual (not supposed) factors at play in the separation of church and state. They even recognize Christianity specifically has been behind many social change movements and demonstrably not just an ‘internal, private spirituality’ thing.

The episodes are long and in-depth but, for the first time in a long time, CBC is giving as fair a shake as can be expected to faith in general and, in places, to Christianity in particular.

It’s by no means pro-Christian but it’s decent place for open discussion.

Kudos to CP24 and CTV for G20 Coverage. A big thumbs down to CBC – where were you??

Big kudos to the indepth, on the spot, largely unbiased coverage I’ve been seeing from CP24 and CTV. Although I have to say I was disappointed in Ann Rohmer’s reporting which seemed to over-sympathize with authories. And a big thumbs down to CBC News Network and CBC Radio 1: Where in the world were you??

Black Bloc needs a White Wall

Been watching the G20 coverage on CBC and CP24 for the past few hours. From what I can tell the Black Bloc, a group of black-clad individuals, has been causing mayhem and violence. If this Black Bloc is giving the government an excuse to take away our freedom to protest then I propose a White Wall: A group of citizens acting against Black Bloc individuals to prevent their mayhem, to stop and apprehend and contain these individuals. In other words, good citizens acting against bad citizens.

Planet Earth

The renowned Planet Earth mega-documentary has been playing on CBC Newsworld HD and, in all its high def glory, it really is something to behold.

The renowned Planet Earth mega-documentary has been playing on CBC Newsworld HD and, in all its high def glory, it really is something to behold. The only thing better would be watching it on imax.

Planet Earth is an amazing journey covering an immense amount of nature. Everything is filmed in exquisite detail. Audio from the scene is added when you wouldn’t have expected it. Under water or from great distances. The time lapse, panoramas and satelite-style cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful.

What is most incredible, though, and what makes it a must watch, is the sheer variety, complexity, creativity and surprise we find in every area of nature.

When God spoke to Job, and tried to tell him he really didn’t have the foggiest clue what was going on and really wasn’t very wise at all, we thought as the years went by we had some inkling of what he meant. Watching Planet Earth will set you back again. And, don’t you doubt it, we don’t even know the half of it yet.

Planet Earth is probably the killer app for Blu-Ray. It’s about the only reason I would consider buying it. Planet Earth is that beautiful and that engrossing.
