When Giving Less Means Giving More #Charity365

There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditure excludes them. –C.S. Lewis

The Impact

I have a cleft palate. Not the prettiest thing in the world, and certainly not the easiest to live with, but I’ve had to deal with it all my life and it has shaped and directed me, whether I wanted it to or not.

As it happened, I was watching TV on a recent, lazy weekend afternoon and channel hopped passed an infomercial about children with cleft palates. I backed up and figured I’d watch for a minute or two… Much later, after many tragic stories with amazingly happy endings, I was pretty convinced what organization I wanted to help next.

But I really didn’t have any more money to give…

We have to go back

I just got done watching the entire series of Lost on Netflix for the second time. What a trip. What story telling. This time around things came a little bit easier. I more often had “aha!” moments and more than a few head-nods to the writer’s foreshadowing. For having gone as long as it did, for having kept almost all of its cast members the entire time, for having a grand story arch they stuck to and finished, and for the sheer magnitude of the undertaking, I can’t think of a better television series. Believe me, I’m a Browncoat, so you can take that to the bank. ;) So, if we have to go back, here are my main take-aways from the show’s six-year run…*spoiler warning*

Word to the Wise: Buy an up-scaling dvd player

Many friends and family I know have purchased an HD TV or are looking at them. None of them have ever considered watching traditional 480p DVDS on an up-scaling dvd player. So, word to the wise: Do yourself a favour and buy a dvd player that can play your old movies in 1080p.

I was so pleasantly surprised watching Serenity and Band of Brothers at 1080p. If you concentrate you can definitely tell it’s not true 1080p but I challenge anybody to tell me it’s not thoroughly enjoyable. It looks almost as good as 1080p and, for enjoyment sake, it’s equivalent.

If you don’t want to get a blu-ray player or just don’t want to move to new format get an up-scaling dvd player and enjoy yourself! I bought mine used for like 40 bucks. Great value!

Planet Earth

The renowned Planet Earth mega-documentary has been playing on CBC Newsworld HD and, in all its high def glory, it really is something to behold.

The renowned Planet Earth mega-documentary has been playing on CBC Newsworld HD and, in all its high def glory, it really is something to behold. The only thing better would be watching it on imax.

Planet Earth is an amazing journey covering an immense amount of nature. Everything is filmed in exquisite detail. Audio from the scene is added when you wouldn’t have expected it. Under water or from great distances. The time lapse, panoramas and satelite-style cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful.

What is most incredible, though, and what makes it a must watch, is the sheer variety, complexity, creativity and surprise we find in every area of nature.

When God spoke to Job, and tried to tell him he really didn’t have the foggiest clue what was going on and really wasn’t very wise at all, we thought as the years went by we had some inkling of what he meant. Watching Planet Earth will set you back again. And, don’t you doubt it, we don’t even know the half of it yet.

Planet Earth is probably the killer app for Blu-Ray. It’s about the only reason I would consider buying it. Planet Earth is that beautiful and that engrossing.
